Sailing the open seas can be one of the most thrilling endeavors that anyone takes on, however even the most experienced sailor will warn you about the great risk that comes along with heading out for the open sea. That being said, Galatea has created a comprehensive safety package to ensure that you have a friend on your side, no matter where in the open seas you may find yourself.

Here are the top 5 security measures that every yacht owner should take:

1. Be Smart and Survey the Skies

The first thing that you should do before going on a trip by sea is study the surroundings that you’ll be visiting. This may sound rudimentary, but the first and arguably most critical thing that every boater should before heading on a journey is check weather conditions to ensure that there are no signs of dangerous weather. If you see signs of darkening skies or turbulent clouds, that might be a good sign to get off the water or postpone your trip.

2. Get to Know Your Boat

Before you take your boat out for a long trip, it’s advised that you take it in for a check-up with a trusted mechanic to ensure that all of your parts are in top shape. There are many services available that help track your maintenance reports.

3. Have the Right Support Handy

Most boating experts recommend designating an assistant skipper before going off for a long journey. You and your skipper should be in constant contact and have a plan of action in the event of an emergency. Make sure that you and your skipper are well versed in how your boat works and that you’re both comfortable with your sailing skills. When you’re out at sea, accessing an appropriate help desk isn’t always the easiest feat.

4. The number to a trusted mechanic

Anyone who owns a car or pleasure craft can vouch that there is nothing more nerve wracking than leaving your vehicle or vessel with a stranger. While we all have a shop or mechanic that we like to turn to, boat owners know that you don’t always have the luxury of being in arms reach of the technician of your choice.

5. Have Proper Boats Documentation

Having the appropriate boating documentation handy is essential for safety and insurance purposes; however being behind the wheel of a boat brings forth the additional threat of water damage in addition to wear and tear of these important documents.

With these safety tips in your arsenal, you’re sure to have a fun and responsible journey on the open seas.
